Having a house full of rescue mutts (we’re currently at 4 dogs) with varying backgrounds means we deal with issues from resource guarding to anxiety. We make meal times regular and consistent so all the dogs know where and when to expect to eat. They learn where to stand to await their food to minimize any aggressive behavior. But we were still having to patrol meal times because some of the dogs would eat super fast and then try to weasel their way to other bowls to steal food.
After a lot of research, I decided to get a few different slow dog feeders and the benefits have been well worth it. We have two different bowls from Outward Hound that happen to be available at a great price during the Amazon Prime Early Access Sale.
Here are two we have. We rotate them every week so the dogs don’t get too used to the pattern of each bowl. They’ve definitely slowed down their meal time and seem to leave the dogs more satisfied. Slow feeders can help improve digestion and extend meal times. They work with any kind of kibble or wet food. As of this writing, the blue feeder below is currently under $8!
We also got a snuffle mat for Fransico since he tends to eat fast and figures out slow feeders quickly. It gives you the option to hide the food in different areas each time you feed. It’s also machine washable.
