Hello Mutineers! If you’ve followed us here on the website or on social media sites like Instagram and Facebook, you know that I like to share the things we actually use around Mutiny Ranch. Since our interests are diverse these items range from animal care to gardening implements but also footwear and kitchen gadgets. No matter what the item is though if we recommend it here then we personally own and use it or have researched it enough to have it on our “wishlist”.
The Mutiny Ranch Item of the day for 4/1/2021 is the Pioneer Pet Fountain. Pet fountains can help encourage your pets to drink more because they are naturally attracted to moving water. Plus, they can keep the water cleaner with built-in filters.
We’ve tried several different kinds of pet water fountains over the years. At the time, the only options were plastic, and most had a tiny reservoir…probably because they were mostly geared toward cats, who tend to be pickier with their water than dogs. Imagine that, a picky cat!
Here are a few issues I found with other water fountains…as mentioned, the reservoir was often small requiring constant checking and filling. Many of the other fountains were completely enclosed with a bubbler on top. While these looked cute I couldn’t see the water level without lifting off the bubbler. There were many times the reservoir would run low and the pump would struggle, making a lot of noise. I’m sure that wasn’t good for the pump but it was also a pain in the keester to not know the water level at a glance. All of the fountains we tried in the past were not dog-friendly. They didn’t have a bowl for them to lap out of and the dogs felt left out. Well, not really but with 3 cats and 3 dogs we felt it was easier to have one watering station in the house suitable for all of them.
Enter the Pioneer Big Max Pet Fountain. At nearly 4 liters of water capacity, this is ideal for our fur family. The big dogs have a nice big bowl to lap out of and the cats can sit and drink from the top bubbling bowl all nice and dainty. The pump is very quiet (unless the water gets really low) and it’s stainless steel!
I really prefer the stainless steel bowls for ease of cleaning and general avoidance of plastic (however, the filter casing is plastic). You can adjust the pump to offer a strong or mild bubbling of water and everything is easy to disassemble for deep cleaning (see the Amazon listing for specific instructions).
Replacement filters are easy to obtain through Amazon and are currently ridiculously inexpensive as of this writing (a pack of 3 filters for less than six dollars and even cheaper if you use Subscribe & Save). Conversely, if you already use filtered water for your pets then I suggest getting an aquarium filter pad and cutting strips off to fit around the inside of the upper bowl. That way the pad will capture any hair or dirt your pets might drop in the water. This will keep your pump from getting clogged as well.
All of our animals love the Pioneer Big Max Pet Fountain and us humans do too. We can check the water level at a glance and top it off without taking anything apart. I feel it’s a worthy investment in our pet’s health and happiness.
