Mutiny Ranch Item of the Day – Rapid Rooter Plant Starting Plugs

March 16, 2021

Hello Mutineers! If you’ve followed us here on the website or on social media sites like Instagram and Facebook, you know that I like to share the things we actually use around Mutiny Ranch. Since our interests are diverse these items range from animal care to gardening implements but also footwear and kitchen gadgets. No matter what the item is though if we recommend it here then we personally own and use it or have researched it enough to have it on our “wishlist”.

Today’s Item of the Day (3/16/2021) is the Rapid Rooter Plant Starting Plugs. If you’ve watched my Kratky Method indoor growing videos (find them on YouTube or Odysee) you might remember me mentioning Rock Wool as the growing medium I was using. Well, after a few trials and errors I’ve changed over completely to using the Rapid Rooter Plugs.

A variety of greens grown in Rapid Rooter Plant Plugs inside mason jars.

The main issues I have with the rock wool were that they tend to fall apart very easily, making it difficult to reuse them. The fact that they also get compressed once wet also inhibited the ability to clean them for reuse. The Rapid Rooter is much more like a sponge…meaning they hold lots of water but also keep their shape. I’ve been able to reuse them at least 4 times (so far). However, occasionally, I have a plant that I let go too long and the roots get woody making it difficult or impossible to remove from the plug without destroying it but that’s rare.

If you’re going to try your hand at Kratky Hydroponics I think you’ll love the Rapid Rooter Plant Starting Plugs. They’re also great for starting clones and rooting cuttings. A few people have mentioned using them in their Aerogardens as well.

Some reviewers swear by them as seed starting plugs for transplanting outdoors but I’d reserve that method for very special crops. Even at the current sale price (sixteen bucks) that makes each plug 32 cents. Better to reuse them and get more bang for your buck. I use food-grade hydrogen peroxide (also 16% off right now) diluted in water to soak them for a few hours and then let them dry in the sun.

The other reason I chose the Rapid Rooter Plant Starting Plugs as today’s Item of the Day is that they are 16% off right now (3/16/2021). That’s almost $3 off at a time when prices for gardening items (including seeds) are rising and it’s the best price I’ve seen for a while. I say, grab ’em while you can!
